HSBC has begun rolling out its Hong Kong dollar-backed RedCoin stablecoin to more than 3.3 million PayMe users, bringing regulated digital currency payments to the bank’s existing retail payment platform.

    Summary

    • HSBC has begun rolling out its Hong Kong dollar-backed RedCoin stablecoin to more than 3.3 million PayMe users.
    • Customers can activate RedCoin wallets without opening another account or maintaining a minimum balance.
    • HSBC’s October 23 disclosure shows HK$80.58 million in circulating RedCoin against HK$81.58 million in reserves.
    • The bank plans to introduce tokenized money market fund subscriptions starting at HK$100 before year-end.
    • HSBC’s launch follows its April stablecoin license approval, with rival Anchorpoint already serving institutional customers.

According to an October 23 report by the South China Morning Post, the phased launch allows customers to send money to other users and pay merchants using RedCoin. HSBC expects to complete the initial rollout before the weekend, with tokenized investment services planned for later this year.

HSBC RedCoin launches through PayMe in Hong Kong

The first phase allows existing PayMe users to activate a RedCoin wallet after updating their application. Customers do not need to open another bank account or maintain a minimum balance to use the service.

Once activated, the wallet supports peer-to-peer transfers and payments to merchants accepting PayMe. Lawrence Li, HSBC’s head of PayMe, said the bank designed the experience to closely resemble the payment process customers already use.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s launch, Li said the initial priority was maintaining reliable service while avoiding unnecessary requirements for customers. The bank is introducing the feature gradually instead of activating it for every eligible user simultaneously.

HSBC’s official RedCoin product page confirms that the token is redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars, subject to applicable terms. The stablecoin runs on HSBC’s own distributed ledger network, where smart contracts handle token creation and transfers.

Moreover, the bank’s documentation clarifies that RedCoin wallets are not ordinary deposit accounts and do not qualify for protection under Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme. Customers will access the stablecoin through HSBC-approved applications, not through unrestricted public blockchain wallets.

HSBC reports HK$80.58M in RedCoin circulation

HSBC’s October 23 disclosure places RedCoin circulation at HK$80.58 million, with reserve assets valued at HK$81.58 million. The figures show reserves exceeding the outstanding token value by approximately HK$1 million at the reporting date.

The bank identifies the disclosed reserve holdings as cash and says it will publish regular independent attestations of its backing assets. According to its product documentation, the first independent attestation report is expected after the fourth quarter of 2026.

The circulating amount provides an initial measure of RedCoin issuance, but it does not establish how many PayMe customers have activated wallets. HSBC has not disclosed the number of completed RedCoin transactions or the proportion of its existing users who have adopted the feature.

The rollout follows HSBC’s September RedCoin announcement, when crypto.news reported that the bank had named its stablecoin ahead of a planned second-half launch. At that stage, HSBC had not issued the token or confirmed a public release date.

Tokenized funds to follow through HSBC banking app

HSBC plans to integrate RedCoin into its Hong Kong mobile banking application before the end of 2026, allowing customers to subscribe to tokenized investment products. The first planned offering is a Hong Kong dollar money market fund with subscriptions starting at HK$100.

The bank intends to introduce tokenized gold and investment funds managed by third parties at later stages. It has not announced exact launch dates for those additional products or identified every participating fund manager.

John O’Neill, HSBC’s managing director of digital assets and currencies, described tokenized settlement as a way to reduce the delays associated with conventional investment processing. However, the planned investment features are separate from RedCoin’s initial PayMe payment functions.

HSBC’s product documentation indicates that RedCoin wallets within PayMe and the future banking application will remain separate. Customers will not be able to transfer RedCoin directly between those two wallets, according to the bank’s published FAQs.

Hong Kong’s licensed stablecoin market expands

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority licensed HSBC and Anchorpoint on April 10 under the city’s Stablecoins Ordinance. HSBC holds license FRS02, while Standard Chartered-backed Anchorpoint Financial holds FRS01.

Anchorpoint had already introduced HKDAP through a controlled institutional rollout, with Standard Chartered becoming its first bank distributor in August. That service initially targeted institutions and professional investors, while HSBC’s PayMe rollout provides access through an established consumer payment application.

Hong Kong’s stablecoin licensing framework requires issuers to meet reserve, redemption and governance requirements. HSBC’s published RedCoin terms specify that tokens are redeemable at par, while its reserve disclosures will be updated regularly on the bank’s website.
